(Heb 2: 1 – 3) “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;”
Earlier this week I had my mediation time in Hebrews chapter two, though I am sure that I have read and heard this passage preached many times in my twenty-five years of being saved. This week for some reason (the prodding of the Holy Spirit maybe), the question “How shall we escape?” has lingered in my mind.
I started by personalizing the question. Have I escaped? Yes. Therefore, according to cause and effect, how did I escape? Twenty-five years ago, while under the conviction of the Holy Spirit, I was invited to church where I heard a preacher preaching from Ecclesiastes chapter twelve. He was admonishing the youths to remember their Creator while they are young. After exegesis of the chapter, the preacher concluded with a quotation of verse thirteen, (Ecc 12: 13) “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” He then asked a simple question: “Are you doing your duty?” That night, I escaped! Praise the Lord! I repented of my sins and trusted Christ as my Lord and Saviour.
Second, I began wondering; how shall they escape? Well, the same way I escaped: by repenting of their sins and trusting Christ as Lord and Saviour. But someone has to tell them how (Rom 10:17). “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Will that someone be you?
If you would like to go and tell others how they can escape just as you have, join us for door-to-door evangelism. How shall they escape? They will escape when the Holy Spirit uses you to preach the Word and they hear and respond to the conviction of the Spirit, believing on Christ and repenting of their sins.
(Acts 3: 19) “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;“
