Do Not Lose Your Sight

In the summer of 2019, I went to get a routine eye exam to replace my glasses. The optometrist, after comparing my past exam results to the current reading, recommended I see an ophthalmologist for a suspected condition known as Keratoconus (KC). KC is an eye condition which your cornea gets thinner and gradually bulges outward in a cone shape. My ophthalmologist diagnosed me with this condition and explained there are no definitive causes for it, except it is more likely in folks with eye allergies and folks who rub their eyes a lot. Regardless of the cause, he advised that my vision would continue to get worse as I age unless I do a routine noninvasive surgery to strengthen the cornea, called a corneal collagen cross-linking. I decided to have the procedure done a month or so later.

As bad as it is to lose your physical sight as you age, the loss of spiritual sight is much worse. I think many times we Christians lose our sight as we age in the Lord. Here are three things I trust I never lose sight of as I age in my walk with Him.

First, may I never lose sight of how wretched a sinner I am. If you are like me and had gotten saved at an early age in life, you may realize that sometimes we can think we are better off than other Christians whom the Lord saved from the filth of this world. While we give the Lord glory for his saving and sustaining grace, and we praise Him because He kept us from a life of past ruin, we are still equally filthy. My sins nailed Christ on the cross just like everyone else’s sin did. I do not want to lose sight of who I am; may it drive me to my knees, restore a humble spirit in me and keep me looking to Him. “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalms 139: 23, 24).

Second, may I never lose sight of what Christ did upon the cross for me. I am in awe when I think that He would die to redeem me from the slave market of sin, that He would take my place so that I may live. I think of my favorite verse in (II Corinthians 5:21) “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Who else could do that? None but my precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Losing sight of what Christ did for me would be the height of ingratitude. He was made sin for me, so that I could have His righteousness. WOW!

Third, may I never lose sight of the hope and the glorious appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ not only bought us back from the slave market of sin, but He also promises that one day He would return for us. And we can endure the wickedness of this world because we know our redemption draweth nigh. Therefore, brothers and sisters, when the burdens of this world are great, do not lose sight. Lift up your eyes, for the eastern skies may open at any moment. “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).

So, if you are losing your spiritual sight, correct it by realigning your vision with God and His Word and see clearly what a mess of a sinner you are, remember what He has done on the cross for you, and look for his glorious appearing. Amen!
